John Sexton

President, New York University

John Sexton is the fifteenth President of New York University, where he is also the Benjamin Butler Professor of Law, and Dean Emeritus of the NYU School of Law. He is a graduate of Fordham University and Harvard University.

Sexton's first career as a high school teacher and debate coach had a strong influence on his views on education, and he is one of the few presidents of a major research university who continue to actively teach, taking on a few undergraduate honors seminars each school year. He is a keen supporter of interscholastic debate and sits on the Board of Directors of the Associated Leaders of Urban Debate (ALOUD), which strives to bring debate activities to underserved urban communities.

Sexton is on the boards of several educational organizations, including the New York State Commission on Higher Education, the American Council on Education, the Institute of International Education, and the Association for a Better New York. He is the Chairman of the Board of the New York Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Executive Committee member of the Association of American University Presidents. Between 2003 and 2006, he was Chairman of the Board of the Federal Research Bank of New York.
